Medline Issues Safety Alert for All Medline Brand Beds
Medline has announced a voluntary removal and discontinuation of all Medline brand beds and associated accessories due to potential fire and patient entrapment risks. The action includes homecare, bariatric and long-term care beds, as well as rails, mattresses, hand controls and replacement parts.
The FDA issued an early safety alert on Oct. 29, reporting two deaths and 16 serious injuries associated with these hazards as of Oct. 20.
Importantly, Medline updated its original instructions on Oct. 24. Affected beds and accessories may continue to be used while repair or replacement is arranged, provided users follow the updated safety precautions.
Key safety instructions
- Keep affected beds unplugged when not being adjusted.
- Plug beds directly into an electrical outlet only when adjustments are necessary, then unplug them afterward.
- Do not use extension cords.
- Whenever possible, have a second person assist with bed adjustments and movement.
- Do not attempt to repair or modify affected beds unless specifically instructed through Medline's authorized repair process.
Medline is establishing options for repair, replacement or full or partial refunds for eligible products.
Why it matters
Many home health and hospice patients rely on adjustable hospital beds for positioning, comfort and safety. Providers should determine whether affected equipment is being used in patient homes and ensure patients and caregivers understand the updated precautions while coordinating appropriate next steps with equipment suppliers.
What to do
- Review the list of affected products and identify potentially impacted patients.
- Contact your DME supplier to coordinate repairs, replacements or other available options.
- Communicate the updated safety instructions to clinical staff, patients and caregivers.
- Review Medline's updated guidance and continue monitoring for additional instructions.
