Medicaid Waiver

Ohio began to offer an Assisted Living Medicaid Waiver as another long-term care option for individuals with Medicaid in July 2006. The Assisted Living Medicaid Waiver pays for the cost of care (not room and board) in participating Assisted Living communities in Ohio. Consumers are responsible for the cost of their room and board at a rate set by the state. For more information on the program or eligibility criteria, please contact your local Area Agency on Aging, www.ohioaging.org

Over the past two Ohio budget cycles, OALA has advocated for and secured increased reimbursement rates for Assisted Living providers.  New rates were enacted in January and July 2024 and we have seen an uptick in OALA Assisted Living provider members applying to be able to accept the Assisted Living Medicaid Waiver as a payor. A memory care option was also added to allow residents to receive this level of care which often has a higher cost associated.
