CHAPLAIN

The Chaplain provides spiritual, religious, and personal counseling and guidance to residents, family members, and staff in accordance with company standards and federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations to ensure that the highest degree of quality care can be maintained at all times.

Essential Activities and Tasks

Operations Management

Coordinates and leads worship services for the retirement community, both on and off-site.
Plans, develops, staffs, and conducts scheduled worship services for residents, family members, and staff with services that are designed to address all levels of functioning and care of the resident population.
Conducts memorial services and honor processionals as requested for deceased residents and at least one annual service of remembrance for those who passed away over the past year.
Performs baptisms as requested by residents or families.
Schedules and conducts Communion services and visitation Communion.
Oversees the scheduling, arrangements, and maintenance of space used for worship, teaching, and other programs.
Provides instruction and training to residents, families, and staff in areas related to pastoral care, counseling, church education, etc.
Trains nursing staff, local clergy and lay people, and other volunteer groups to supplement the campus pastoral care, if applicable.
Teaches Bible classes and other religious and spiritual topics for resident groups.
Serves as a professionally trained resource member of the Ethics Committee and offers programs related to end-of-life decisions and other interdisciplinary efforts.
Organizes and oversees the work of the retirement community’s Spiritual Life Committee.
Attends the Council on Spiritual Life meetings at the corporate office twice a year.

Care Management and Service Delivery

Coordinates all pastoral care services offered to residents, family members, and staff.
When appropriate, contacts the resident’s church and pastor to inform them of the need for pastoral care for their member, especially for the sick and dying.
Develops a Pastoral Care Plan with each requesting resident and their designated home pastor where possible.
Visits and supports residents, family members, and staff in crisis, as well as those requesting pastoral care, especially the dying, the acutely ill, and the hospitalized.
Acts as liaison between residents, staff, and medical professionals to assist residents in meeting their needs while preserving their dignity.

Community Relations

Teams with staff members to coordinate church relations programs between the retirement community and local judicatories, congregations, etc.
Communicates vital information with local pastors and churches regarding the services of the retirement community and develops mutually endorsed mission efforts.
Facilitates the involvement and welcoming of local churches in the worship and pastoral care life on campus, is considerate and reflective to the population served, and participates in the worship life of local churches as invited.
Attends meetings of appropriate clergy associations, conferences, presbyteries, synods, and districts. Participates as expected by one's own cognate group.
Serves on boards, committees, and task forces of congregations and judicatories.
Offers leadership in promoting the mission of the organization and helping to interpret it to residents, family members, staff, and local communities and congregations.

Administration and Reporting

Assists in preparing and maintaining a budget for chaplaincy services.
Keeps records of pastoral activities and reports as requested.
Oversees social accountability for the retirement community, if applicable.
Annually develops and submits to the company a personal accounting of housing expenses for IRS reporting purposes.

Qualifications

Education

Master of Divinity or equivalent from a seminary or graduate school accredited by the Association Theological Schools required.
Ordained and endorsed by a faith group in good standing.
One unit of clinical pastoral education (CPE) required, four units preferred.
Certified by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or eligibility for board certification in the APC or its equivalent (i.e. certified by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC), the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) is preferred.
Certification in Spiritual Direction preferred.

Experience

Three years experience in parish ministry, hospital chaplaincy, or an equivalent required.
Experience working with adults which shows a positive attitude toward aging and adults, sensitivity to their needs, and knowing how to provide pastoral care to them.
Experience working in a holistic/wellness program preferred.
Proficiency with Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and the internet required.
