Navigating Antimicrobial Use at End of Life
HospiLearn Series
WEBINAR
Patients at end of life may have increased susceptibility to infections. Antimicrobial use is often a part of hospice care provider’s discussions with patients and caregivers. Despite being commonly prescribed, guidance for optimal use of antimicrobials in the hospice setting is limited and clinical benefits for symptom improvement are unclear. Risks associated with antimicrobials include adverse effects, poor tolerability, increased medication burden, and risk of bacterial resistance. This presentation will review principles of antimicrobial stewardship and considerations for antimicrobial use in the hospice setting including antimicrobial selection, dose and duration considerations, potential risks, goals of care discussions, and suggestions for determining which patients may be most likely to benefit.
