CDC Updates Enhanced Barrier Precautions

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has updated guidance on precautions for residents with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO). The CDC recognizes that contact isolation can create challenges for nursing homes in balancing quality of life and preventing the spread of MDROs.

The CDC is addressing this by providing guidance on using enhanced barrier precautions. The use of gloves and gown would be needed during high-contact resident care. Examples of this type of care include: Dressing; Bathing/showering, Transferring, Providing hygiene, Changing linens, Changing briefs or assisting with toileting, Device care or use: central line, urinary catheter, feeding tube, tracheostomy/ventilator, and wound care.

Refer to the CDC document: Implementation of Personal Protective Equipment in Nursing Homes to Prevent Spread of Novel or Targeted Multidrug-resistant Organisms (MDROs) for the full guidance.
