SNF 3-Day Rule Billing Fact Sheet
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a fact sheet on the three-day prior hospitalization before skilled nursing facility (SNF) admission rule. This fact sheet reiterates that Medicare beneficiaries must meet the rule by staying three consecutive days in an inpatient hospital with the admission day counting toward the three days and the discharge day not counting toward the three days.
Emergency room visits and observation stays do not count toward the three-day rule. The fact sheet includes information about waivers for the three-day rule. It also provides examples and gives a table with several resources available on the topic.
