Anticipatory Grief: Supporting Patients & Families in the Face of Decline and Imminent Death

Lunch & Learn Series

WEBINAR

Historically, anticipatory grief” (AG) experienced by family/caregivers prior to a patient’s death has been perceived as a necessary, helpful, and proactive aspect of “grief work.” Current research does not confirm this and instead suggests that AG may be a misnomer and that the manifestation of intense grief experienced by family members/caregivers during the patient’s illness predicts bereavement complications post death, i.e. AG does not lessen post death bereavement.   This presentation will explore the importance of acknowledging pre-loss grief and preparedness for death as powerful factors in healthy adjustment to a patient’s decline and death. Positive interventions will be highlighted. (Nielsen, MK, et.al. Do we need to change our understanding of anticipatory grief in caregivers? A systematic review of caregiver studies during end-of-life caregiving and bereavement. Clinical Psychology Review, 2016; 44:75-93.)
