ODH Proposes to Revise DNR Rules and Form

LeadingAge Ohio has been actively engaged in the five-year rule review of the DNR rule package. Although the actual rules did not change significantly due to statutory limitations, healthcare providers and members of the community will soon see a new look to the DNR order form.  In trying to simplify the form and provide more clarity to first responders, the form will be only one page with explicit instructions for healthcare professionals. The form is not to be altered with additional information written in on the form and it must have the official DNR logo for the DNR order to be transportable.  One very positive aspect of the new rules and form is an Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) can sign the DNR order if they include the name of their supervising (PA) or collaborating (APRN) physician and the physician’s NPI, DEA, or Ohio medical license number on the form. LeadingAge Ohio will be seeking clarity in their comments related to who can revoke a DNR order and how the revocation of the order might be carried out during an emergent situation. The public comment period will end October 11. If you have questions regarding the proposed DNR rules contact Anne Shelley at ashelley@leadingageohio.org
